Saxon. Done with Crawling.

About six weeks ago (10 months old for everyone keeping score), Saxon took her first steps. Last week, she was officially done with crawling. Period. Just stopped like it was a bad habit and now is walking. This, of course, means more perils and dangers for the child with no fear. These photos were taken at the C&W Ranch in Smolan, Kansas (population 218).

Stair Climbing Saxon

Sorry for being incommunicado. Lots of posts coming up. Saxon has decided that one really, really fun activity is climbing the stairs. I discovered this one day when I dared to take my eyes off of her for about 30 seconds and looked up to see her in a rapid ascent up the stairs. Gasp. These photos were taken 5.19.2007 when Saxon was just over 9 months old young.

Saxon at [almost] seven months

This weekend, Saxon will be seven months old. The most-oft heard comment by this new parent is some variation of “enjoy ‘em, they grow up really fast.” We also heard from quite a few people, “enjoy her now, because she’ll be a teenager some day and hate you.” The even more pessimistic (or realistic?) advisor has said, “enjoy her while she’s a baby because she will be two soon.”

Well, I can only attest to the truth of Saxon growing up fast. So you can see how fast, I thought I’d post some very current photographs (taken jump ahead to photographs of Saxon taken yesterday and on Saturday).

Some photographs, taken 3.3.07, of Carey feeding Saxon one of her favorite foods - peas (organic, of course!). We’re putting our pressure cooker we received as a wedding gift to good use fast-cooking carrots, sweet potatoes & peas. Lots of yummy nutritious veggies that have no preservatives and have to taste better than the meals-in-da-jar.

Smiling Saxon

So many times I heard, “when your child smiles at you for the very first time…you just melt (or other gooey descriptor)…” I was told this not only by my mother, in hopes of convincing me to produce some grandkids, but from lots of people - including a friend from New England who is one of the least Alan Alda, sensitive-guy types I know.

I have read that a newborn’s hearing ability, at birth, is comparable to an adult’s hearing, but their vision is very limited, taking longer to develop. On Sunday, I picked up Carey and Saxon at Love Field on their return from Kansas City. Picking up Saxon, she looked at me with her focus locked upon me. Saxon really stared at me while I talked to her, possibly thinking, “Oh, so that’s what you look like, Dad.”

During the middle of Saxon’s stare-fest, she looked like she was smiling at me. Carey was grabbing her bag and I unsuccessfully tried to wave her over for a 2nd opinion - verifying a smile (vs. wishful thinking).

Monday morning, as I was about to leave for the airport for my flight to NYC, Saxon smiled, smiled and smiled again. Carey confirmed - that’s a smile. And what they say about “the first time your child smiles at you…” is all true. :)
