Ranger Hearts Saxon

A few months ago, we posted Ranger with Saxon - Part I which featured short video footage of Saxon & Ranger interacting (actually, it was video of Saxon giving Ranger a smackdown and Ranger getting the heck out of Dodge). Ranger Ranger Since that time, Ranger has developed a strategy for parrying Saxon’s friendliness, which is usually in the form of climbing on him or grabbing the hair on his face.

Ranger: Oh great. Here she comes again. Keeping one eye on Saxon.

the stare-down.

ready for action…

Saxon closes in…and Ranger utilizes his tongue. Lots of kisses for Saxon!
Tongue in action

OK, now move along little Saxon.

Works every time!

Ranger, a terrier mix adopted from the SPCA was adopted by me a dozen years ago. He is quirky and a bit of an oddball on the best of days. Ranger was abused the first 4 or 5 months of his life and still carries some baggage because of it. But lots of patience and training have paid off. Ranger tolerates just about anything Saxon dishes out. The other day, I looked down to see Ranger laying on his side and Saxon pulling the hair on the pads of his feet (ouch!). Rarely would he permit me to do so, but he just looked up, saw it was Saxon, sighed and put his head back down.

A week or two ago, I heard a big laugh from little Saxon. Under the dining table, Saxon had a large post card in her hands and was placing it on Ranger’s head, playing peekaboo, letting out a deep, belly laugh each time she covered his eyes. Ranger just sat there, staring at me with a “I cannot believe I’m allowing this to happen” look.

Now, he’s not a Lab that will allow you to saddle him up for 2 year old doggie rides, but with Saxon, Ranger is a Moseley World model citizen as far as both Carey and I am concerned. Ranger is sorry to disappoint the naysayers and will gladly accept apologies in the form of Greenies.

Lucky Sevens Party - More Photos

As promised, some more photos from the little birthday party Carey put together for my 40th birthday on 7.7.7. The theme of the party was island casino and we created the Lucky Sevens Island Casino for one night.

Of course in the Land of Lucky 7’s, real US currency just won’t work because the only currency that is any good is Lucky 7’s money (see below).

each guest received 10,000 Lucky Sevens Dollars

Lucky Sevens Party

You may have heard about July 7, 2007 [aka 7/7/7] being a big day for weddings. Since it was on a Saturday and lots of people feel like they need lots of luck on their wedding day, records were set for the number of weddings held on 7/7/7. More importantly - 7/7/7 was my birthday. Not just any ole birthday, but a big one. I was born 7/7/67, so do the math.

Carey put on and organized a fabulous party, with the theme of island casino. We commissioned the very talented Dirk Fowler, of D-2 Designs (you may seen the 8 page feature on Dirk and his concert poster designs in the June 2007 issue of Texas Monthly) to create the logo/motif and invitation for the party. Dirk created the perfect design for the party - as well as limited edition posters on his antique letterpress printer. Check out his website to see more of his great designs.

Carey’s friend and chic event planner, Donette (Events-3) Primm, helped plan the soiree, which was held at the historic Mitchell Lofts building. Not a detail was missed! Act I of the party in my office/studio. Upon arrival, guests were greeted and lei’d by our cute Tiki girls. No, silly, floral leis, you know, leis from Hawaii.

Our friends from Wendy Krispin Caterer dispensed your choice of beverage. My favorite was the Tonga Punch (email me and I’ll send you the recipe - created at Trader Vic’s)…Tropical, colorful, but not too sweet! Waiters magically appeared with plates of yummy snacks like grilled shrimp on sugar cane skewers. More photos & details to come later.

We also had a photo booth - here are some of the photos from the photo booth:

Saxon Hanging out at Dad’s Office

Last month, Carey and I had to run down to my office on a Saturday afternoon and I couldn’t resist taking pictures of our little Magellan, Saxon the Explorer.

Drawing of Uncle Chris

From the archives — We got to spend some time at Easter with Carey’s family in Kansas. Our niece, Avery, obviously a budding artist, worked hard on several drawings while we were eating lunch one day. She was even kind enough to give me one - a portrait she drew of me. Since I did not realize I was sitting for a portrait while eating, I’m glad she captured my good side. Thanks, Avery. Keep up the good work!
