Smiling Saxon

So many times I heard, “when your child smiles at you for the very first time…you just melt (or other gooey descriptor)…” I was told this not only by my mother, in hopes of convincing me to produce some grandkids, but from lots of people - including a friend from New England who is one of the least Alan Alda, sensitive-guy types I know.

I have read that a newborn’s hearing ability, at birth, is comparable to an adult’s hearing, but their vision is very limited, taking longer to develop. On Sunday, I picked up Carey and Saxon at Love Field on their return from Kansas City. Picking up Saxon, she looked at me with her focus locked upon me. Saxon really stared at me while I talked to her, possibly thinking, “Oh, so that’s what you look like, Dad.”

During the middle of Saxon’s stare-fest, she looked like she was smiling at me. Carey was grabbing her bag and I unsuccessfully tried to wave her over for a 2nd opinion - verifying a smile (vs. wishful thinking).

Monday morning, as I was about to leave for the airport for my flight to NYC, Saxon smiled, smiled and smiled again. Carey confirmed - that’s a smile. And what they say about “the first time your child smiles at you…” is all true. :)

Saxon gives a shout-out to her peeps

Saxon gets more “vocal” each day. Rather than the same form of communication for everything (screeching!), she makes other interesting noises, most of which are more pleasant than the full-out screech. Here’s an example of nice baby sounds:

Saxon digs her Low-Tech Lounger

Saxon in her Bouncy Seat
Originally uploaded by Chris Moseley.

Saxon loves hanging out in her Oeuf Lounger, aka Bouncy Chair, even though it’s very low tech. Can you imagine a kid being happy in a chair that’s not vibrating, playing music and flashing lights (all at the same time)?

The chair bounces when Saxon moves - whoa! What a concept. No batteries required. As a bonus, the Oeuf Lounger comes in a plain, solid color! Oy vey, how long has it been since you’ve seen anything for “baby” that didn’t scream B-A-B-Y?

OK baby-owners parents, can you help? I’d like to have some kind arc-shaped “activity bar” with visually-interesting things (?) that I could snap onto each side of the Lounger. Something like a mobile but connected to the chair.

We hate to see Saxon staring off into space when one of us is at home solo and we’ve jumped in the shower or are cooking dinner. Yeah, she looks really content, but I’m sure she would rather be learning… :)

ANY IDEAS? Post ‘em in comments - thanks in advance.

Saxon’s First Airplane Ride

First Airplane Ride

Originally uploaded by Chris Moseley.

Carey took Saxon on her first airplane trip on Saturday. I was in Kansas City to photograph the big wedding of Carey’s friends Shanna Shoemaker and Joey Grant [btw, congratulations, Shanna and Joey!].

Carey said Saxon was an “angel” on the short trip from Dallas to KC. On the very early (very early: 6:15am) return flight to Dallas, Saxon snoozed the entire trip, paying no attention to the bumpy ride.

The turbulence was severe enough that the flight attendent offered her Top 10 list of Things to Do to Keep you from Barfing on the Plane. Could it be possible that my special motion-sickness gene was not passed-along to Saxon?

More Visitors for Saxon

Saxon and her Uncle Sam
Originally uploaded by Chris Moseley.

Saxon’s great aunt & uncle, Kay and Sam Moseley, stopped by to see Saxon. They were on their way back from a great trip to Seattle, Vancouver & Alaska.

They come to the Dallas area around once a month to visit their cute grandkids, but only the lure of getting to see Saxon, their latest “grand” niece, would get them to stop off at our house. We’ll take ‘em any way we can get ‘em and were so glad to get a chance to show off Saxon and to visit.
